Attitudes Toward Bisexual Women and Men
There has been significant growth in the past two decades in the psychological literature exploring sexual orientations from gay, lesbian, and bisexual perspectives, as well as the role of culture and ethnicity on human development. However, the research on sexual orientation has been predominantly focused on gays and lesbians from an overwhelmingly White, middle-class population.
Bisexual men and women are consistently influenced by a variety of negative attitudes that can lead to prejudice and discrimination against them. Heterosexuality is one such attitude that can be expressed in a variety of ways, including questioning of authenticity, concerns about sex, concerns about fidelity, and positive attitudes. Studies have shown that heterosexuality is associated with negative attitudes towards bisexual people.
In addition to heterosexuality, there is also the question of whether bisexual people are heterosexual or gay in their orientation (i.e. their "true" sexual identity). Some people think that bisexuality is nothing more than a stage of experimentation or confusion about sexual identity—that bisexual people are not really bisexual, but rather closeted gay men or lesbians.
There are also concerns about fidelity to both genders; this may include a belief that bisexual people will betray their partners with members of either gender. No one can be loyal to anyone all the time. Everything in the world is changing rapidly, there is no need for moral kidnapping, we are only loyal to our own hearts.
Bisexuality is a complex topic. It's not just about sexual orientation, it's about how people perceive bisexual people. Attitudes toward bisexual women and men are often shaped by social norms, and these attitudes can be positive or negative. There are several types of attitudes towards bisexual people:
Heterosexuality is the assumption that heterosexuality is superior to other forms of sexuality. Do not mock other sexual orientations just because you are heterosexual. You can disagree, but you can't disrespect.
Authenticity issues can arise when people believe that a person's sexuality is not real or that they are "going through a phase." Focusing on sex can lead to negative stereotypes and prejudice against bisexual people as they are perceived as promiscuous or sexually indiscriminate.
Concerns about fidelity may be expressed when it is believed that bisexual people are unable to commit due to their desire for multiple partners. But in fact, it doesn't matter what sexual orientation, or how many partners you have. When it comes to bisexual dating, it is enough to be true to your partner.
In the end, positive attitudes toward bisexuality may stem from understanding what it means to be attracted to members of both genders, and respecting those who identify with you. Labels are given by others, we should live for ourselves.
